Effective Isentropic Diffusivity of Tropospheric Transport

چکیده
Tropospheric transport can be described qualitatively by the slow mean diabatic circulation and rapid isentropic mixing, yet a quantitative understanding of the transport circulation is complicated, as nearly half of the isentropic surfaces in the troposphere frequently intersect the ground. A theoretical framework for the effective isentropic diffusivity of tropospheric transport is presented. Compared with previous isentropic analysis of effective diffusivity, a new diagnostic is introduced to quantify the eddy diffusivity of the nearsurface isentropic flow. This diagnostic also links the effective eddy diffusivity directly to a diffusive closure of eddy fluxes through a finite-amplitude wave activity equation. The theory is examined in a dry primitive equation model on the sphere. It is found that the upper troposphere is characterized by a diffusivity minimum at the jet’s center with enhanced mixing at the jet’s flanks and that the lower troposphere is dominated by strongermixing throughout the baroclinic zone. This structure of isentropic diffusivity is generally consistent with the diffusivity obtained from the geostrophic component of the flow. Furthermore, the isentropic diffusivity agrees broadly with the tracer equivalent length obtained from either a spectral diffusion scheme or a semi-Lagrangian advection scheme, indicating that the effective diffusivity of tropospheric transport is largely dictated by large-scale stirring rather than details of the smallscale diffusion acting on the tracers.

Effective Diffusivity in Baroclinic Flow
Large-scale chaotic stirring stretches tracer contours into filaments containing fine spatial scales until smallscale diffusive processes dissipate tracer variance. Quantification of tracer transport in such circumstances is possible through the use of Nakamura’s ‘‘effective diffusivity’’ diagnostics, which make clear the controlling role of stirring, rather than small-scale dissipation, in lar...
متن کاملA Climatology of Tropospheric Zonal-Mean Water Vapor Fields and Fluxes in Isentropic Coordinates
Based on reanalysis data for the years 1980–2001 from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ERA-40 data), a climatology of tropospheric zonal-mean water vapor fields and fluxes in isentropic coordinates is presented. In the extratropical free troposphere, eddy fluxes dominate the meridional flux of specific humidity along isentropes. At all levels, isentropic eddy fluxes trans...
متن کاملOn the linkages between the tropospheric isentropic slope and eddy fluxes of heat during Northern Hemisphere winter
Previous studies have demonstrated the key role of baroclinicity and thus the isentropic slope in determining the climatological-mean distribution of the tropospheric eddy fluxes of heat. Here the authors examine the role of variability in the isentropic slope in driving variations in the tropospheric eddy fluxes of heat about their long-term mean during Northern Hemisphere winter. On month-to-...
متن کاملFeedbacks between the isentropic slope and wave generation at tropospheric levels
The authors examine feedbacks between the isentropic slope and the generation of eddy activity in the Northern Hemisphere winter. The results reveal that periods of enhanced lower tropospheric eddy heat fluxes (and thus wave generation) are preceded by anomalously steep isentropic surfaces in the free troposphere, and followed by anomalously poleward eddy momentum fluxes near the tropopause. Th...
متن کاملQuantifying Isentropic Transport and Mixing in a Modified Lagrangian
Isentropic transport and mixing are important processes for the distribution of chemical constituents in the mid-to-high latitudes. A new framework is introduced to quantify both isentropic transport and isentropic mixing in a modified Lagrangian coordinate. The framework is applied to quantify the transport and mixing associated with the two types of Rossby wave breaking (i.e. cyclonic and ant...
